Beautiful breasts are not just a matter of size. A skilled cosmetic surgeon can create a more beautiful, proportional breast shape using techniques tailored to address a woman's unique needs.

The breast lift procedure is done to elevate and reshape the breasts by removing excess skin and some underlying tissue along with repositioning remaining tissue and nipples. In some cases this may be substituted by or combined with breast augmentation surgery.

Is Breast Lift Surgery For You?

A breast lift restores a firmer, perkier, and more aesthetically pleasing shape to sagging breasts. This not only can improve a patient’s appearance by restoring her youthful, feminine proportions, but also help bras and swimsuits fit more comfortably and attractively.

By removing excess, stretched out skin, reshaping the breast tissue, and raising the nipple & areola into a more forward position, a cosmetic surgeon can create a more youthful breast contour. Stretched, large areolae can also be reduced during breast lift surgery, creating an overall better proportioned, natural looking breast.

Breast Lift Surgery can be used to restore a better breast shape following pregnancy & breastfeeding. Pregnancy can bring some unwelcome changes to the breasts, often leaving them stretched and sagging. A breast lift, with or without implants, can help undo these changes and restore a more aesthetically pleasing appearance.

It can also improve breast contour after significant weight loss. Losing weight often means losing breast volume. A breast lift can help restore a more proportional, youthful breast shape by removing excess skin.

You can also enjoy a beautiful, perky breast shape for the first time. A small but growing number of breast lift patients have had drooping breasts since their teens. Breast lift surgery can help a woman get the breast profile she has always wanted.

Questions to ask yourself are:

While the only way to confirm whether or not a breast lift is right for your is to consult with a cosmetic surgeon, there are a couple of questions you can ask yourself to get a general idea about how a breast lift might help improve your breast shape.

  • Do my nipples seem to point downward?
  • Does the nipple/areola sit below the crease underneath my breast?
  • Am I happy with my breast size when wearing a bra?
  • Are my breasts asymmetrical or unusually shaped?

What to Expect

During breast lift procedure excess skin and some underlying tissue are removed along with repositioning remaining tissue and nipples. In some cases this may be substituted by or combined with breast augmentation surgery.

The best candidates for breast lift surgery are women who are physically healthy, psychologically stable, and realistic in their expectations.

Most are 30 or older, but if sagging or heavy breasts are a problem, you may decide to have this procedure at a younger age.

Results of breast lift surgery vary: gravity, pregnancy, aging, and weight changes may cause new sagging. Results may last longer or be enhanced when breast implants are inserted as part of the procedure.

Long term scaring is the most common problem after breast lift.

Skin loss and infection are also a rare but possible risk.

Unevenly positioned nipples and permanent loss of feeling in nipples or breasts are also reported complications of this surgery.

Breast lift surgery is typically performed as an outpatient procedure using general anesthesia or local anesthesia + intravenous sedation.

The procedure takes about 1-2 hours to perform, depending on the extent of surgery.

You will be able to go home shortly after surgery to continue your recovery.

Your breasts will be bandaged or placed in a surgical bra.

Most patients experience some soreness and swelling after breast lift surgery.

Your cosmetic surgeon will prescribe pain medication to help keep you comfortable.

While you’ll be able to get up and walk around the house the same day of surgery, take it easy for the first few days.

Also, expect to sleep on your back for the first several weeks or more after surgery. If you normally sleep on your side or stomach, invest in some extra pillows to help keep you from turning over.

Many patients return to work within the first week after breast lift surgery, depending on the nature of their jobs, and resume most daily activities after a week or so.

You will need to limit exercise other than walking for the first 4 - 6 weeks after a breast lift.

Residual soreness and swelling should gradually subside over the first several months after a breast lift, and most patients are permitted to begin wearing underwire bras again after about 8 weeks.
